Lesson 48 · about 5 minutes

Softeners — ちょっと / なんか / ね / よ / よね

chotto · nanka · ne · yo · yone

ちょっと・なんか・ね・よ・よね

You'll learn five little words that make casual speech sound natural: softeners and sentence vibes.

The words

RomajiJapaneseReadingMeaning
chottoちょっとちょっとa little / "um…" (softener or hedge)
nankaなんかなんかlike… / somehow (filler softener)
neねねright? / seeking agreement
yoよよI'm telling you / new info for you
yoneよねよねright? (I think you agree)

How they differ

Stick these on casual lines:

Soften: 「ちょっと むずかしい。」「なんか おいしい。」

ね = check with the listener: 「かわいい ね。」

よ = give info: 「きょう ひま だ よ。」

よね = shared assumption: 「たのしかった よね。」

Particles once: these ride at the end (ね/よ/よね) or float early (ちょっと/なんか). They don't replace grammar — they color it.

Soft front, vibe end: ちょっと/なんか · ね/よ/よね. ね = nod together, よ = I know, よね = we both know.

One line: ちょっと ね。いい よ。たのしい よね。

Next: Casual invites: いっしょに いかない? / どう?

See it in a sentence

Watch out

ね seeks a nod · よ pushes info · よね assumes shared ground — swap them and the vibe flips ちょっと can mean "a little" or start a soft no (Lesson 50) These are peer flavor — don't stack them onto stiff です/ます with strangers

Try it

  1. In your next story, find a plain statement. Add ね, よ, or よね and say which vibe you chose (agree / tell / shared).

    Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
