Lesson 47 · about 2 minutes

Casual questions — の? / かな / rising tone

no? · ~kana · hontou?

You'll learn three casual ways to ask without ですか: の?, かな, and a rising tone.

The pattern

RomajiJapaneseReadingMeaning
no?の?のsoft casual question tag ("…?")
I wonder…" / soft self-question
hontou? ほんとうrising tone alone — same words, voice goes up, no particle needed

How they differ

Polite「〜ですか?」→ casual:

「いく の?」(iku no?): Are you going? (soft)

「あした かな…」(ashita kana…): Tomorrow, I wonder…

の? softens and seeks confirmation. かな is lighter — thinking aloud, not grilling someone. Rising tone alone works with friends: 「ほんとう?」

Three ask shapes: up · の? Up = voice, の? = soft check, かな = wonder.

One line:

Next: Softeners and fillers: ちょっと / なんか / ね / よ / よね.

See it in a sentence

    Are you free? (casual soft)

  2. iku no?

    Are you going? (casual)

  3. dou kana…

    I wonder… / Not sure…

  4. hontou?

    Really? (rising tone)

  5. nani shiteru no?

    What are you doing?

    (casual; てる in Lesson 48)

Watch out

の? = soft question — not the same as explanatory のだ/んだ (you'll hear that later) かな = wonder/soft — not a sharp yes/no demand Keep ですか with staff and elders; の? is peer talk

Try it

  1. In your next story, find a ですか question. Rebuild it as の? or rising tone, then say it out loud.

Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
