Lesson 49 · about 5 minutes

Casual thanks, sorry, bye

arigatou · gomen · jaa ne · mata ne

You'll learn the short peer versions of thank you, sorry, and goodbye — vs the ございます forms you already know.

The words

RomajiJapaneseReadingMeaning
jaa neじゃあねじゃあねsee ya / bye for now
mata neまたねまたねsee you later / till next time

How they differ

Polite Wave E → Wave F casual:

Leaving peers: 「

じゃあね ≈ wrapping the chat now. またね ≈ we'll catch each other again (pairs with Lesson 42's また あいましょう).

With staff/strangers: keep ございます and すみません.

ございます coat off for friends; ごめん is the soft bump apology.

One line:

Next: Soft no and hedges:

See it in a sentence

  1. arigatou!

    Thanks! (casual)

  2. gomen.

    Sorry. (casual)

  3. jaa ne.

    See ya.

  4. mata ne!

Watch out

ありがとう = peer thanks · ありがとう ございます = polite — wrong register feels cold or too chummy ごめん ≠ すみません for staff — use すみません in shops じゃあね / またね are peer byes — not for customers or first-time formal goodbyes

Try it

  1. In your next story, find ありがとう ございます or すみません. Swap in ありがとう / ごめん and say whether the scene is peer-ok or should stay polite.

Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
