Lesson 51 · about 5 minutes

uun · chotto… · mata kondo · ii yo · dame

You'll learn how friends say yes, soft no, and "maybe later" without a hard slam.

The pattern

RomajiJapaneseReadingMeaning
hmm (thinking or soft reluctance)
chotto… / it's a bit… (classic soft no trail-off)
mata kondoまた 今度また こんどanother time / next time (soft rain check)
ii yoいいよいいよsure / that's fine (casual yes / permission)
dameだめだめno good / can't (clearer no — use carefully)

How they differ

Casual replies to invites (Lesson 46):

Yes: 「うん。」 (very casual)」

Soft no: 「うーん…」「ちょっと…」「また 今度。」

Clearer no among close friends: 「

Polite twins you already know: 「いい です」/「ちょっと…」/「また こんど」(Lesson 25 / 42).

Tasteful: leave people an easy out. ちょっと… plus silence is often enough.

ちょっと… is the universal soft brake.

One line:

Next: Wave F street-casual wraps here (43–50). You can now pair polite town + social lines with the peer endings friends actually use — still practical, still story-readable. Stay in teineigo with staff, st
