Lesson 50 · about 2 minutes
Casual invites —
issho ni ikanai? · dou? · ~nai?
You'll learn the casual twin of いきませんか: いかない? and the soft どう?
The pattern
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| issho ni ikanai? (casual invitation) | |
| dou? | どう | how about it? / what do you think? | |
| ~nai? | (bonus shape) 〜ない? | 〜ない | negative question = soft invite |
How they differ
Polite Lesson 42: 「いっしょに いきませんか?」
Shape: plain negative + rising tone = "won't you…?"
「たべない?」(tabenai?): Wanna eat?
「みない?」(minai?): Wanna watch?
どう? is short and soft after a suggestion: 「この カフェ、どう?」
Still tasteful: friendly, optional yes/no, no pressure. Soft declines come in Lesson 50.
= "how about?"
One line:
Next: Casual I/you words: おれ / ぼく / わたし · きみ / あなた — and when not to use them.
See it in a sentence
issho ni ikanai?
Wanna go together? (casual)
dou?

How about coffee?
eiga minai?

shuumatsu, hima nara ikanai?

Watch out
いかない? as invite = soft "wanna go?" — tone makes it invitation, not accusation Keep いきませんか with new acquaintances / careful settings; いかない? is peer-close どう? ≠ どうして (why) — short どう? here means "how about it?"
Try it
In your next story, find いきませんか or an invite. Say the casual いかない? / どう? version out loud.
Produce the casual twin; keep polite with staff/strangers/elders.
