Lesson 53 · about 5 minutes
Casual I and you — recognize おれ / ぼく / きみ
ore · boku · watashi · kimi · anata
おれ・ぼく・わたし・きみ・あなた
You'll **recognize** casual "I" and "you" in stories — and learn **when not** to use them. Keep **producing** わたし and name+さん.
The words
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ore | おれ | おれ | I (casual, often masculine-coded among friends) — **recognize first** | |
| boku | ぼく | ぼく | I (softer casual, often masculine-coded / gentle) — **recognize first** | |
| watashi | わたし | わたし | I (safe default; produce this) | |
| kimi | きみ | きみ | you (casual; can feel intimate or talking-down) — **recognize first; do not default** | |
| anata | あなた | あなた | you (textbook "you"; often odd or too direct) — **recognize; rarely produce** |
How they differ
Japanese often skips "I/you" when clear.
Produce:
わたし for "I"
Their name + さん (or skip the pronoun) instead of "you"
Recognize in stories / peer speech later (Wave F):
おれ / ぼく among close peers (not your day-one default)
きみ / あなた — hear them; don't lead with them
Rule of thumb: if unsure, drop the pronoun or use the name.
Safe stack: わたし · name+さん · skip. おれ/ぼく/きみ = story/peer flavors to hear — not staff or elder defaults.
One line: produce わたし · call people 〜さん · recognize おれ/きみ.
Next: Everyday contractions: てる / ちゃう / なきゃ / んだけど.
See it in a sentence
watashi wa nyuu yooku kara desu.
わたし は ニューヨーク から です。
I'm from New York. (safe produce)
adamu san wa?
アダム さん は?
What about you, Adam? (name instead of "you")
watashi mo ikimasu.
わたし も いきます。
I'll go too. (safe)
onamae wa?
おなまえは?
What's your name?
(no あなた) (polite; avoids あなた)
sakura san wa hima desu ka?
さくら さん は ひま ですか?
Sakura, are you free?
Watch out
おれ/ぼく are casual peer "I" — not for customers, bosses, staff, or first meetings with elders Prefer name + さん over きみ/あなた with anyone you're not close to Skipping the pronoun is often the most natural Japanese Produce わたし / name+さん; treat おれ/きみ as recognize-first
Try it
In your next story, find わたし, おれ, ぼく, or a "you." Note: pronoun, name, or nothing? Say the safe version out loud with わたし or name+さん.
Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
