Drop です — plain だ and bare adjectives

da · kawaii · gakusei

だ・かわいい・がくせい

You'll learn how friends drop です: plain だ after nouns, and bare い-adjectives like かわいい.

The pattern

がくせい だ。かわいい。

RomajiJapaneseReadingMeaning
daだだplain "is" after a noun/な-adj (casual twin of です)
kawaiiかわいいかわいいbare い-adjective — say alone, no です
gakuseiがくせいがくせいnoun alone with です dropped (often no だ either with friends)

How they differ

Polite → casual:

「がくせい です」→「がくせい だ」/ often just「がくせい。」

「かわいい です」→「かわいい。」(い-adjectives don't take だ in plain affirmative)

「たのしい です」→「たのしい。」

だ marks a firm "is" with nouns: 「それ は コーヒー だ。」 With friends, bare adjectives and short noun lines are the street default.

Keep です/ます with strangers, staff, and elders.

Two switches: noun → だ · い-adj → bare. です is the polite coat; peel it off with peers.

One line: がくせい だ。かわいい。

Next: Casual questions: の? / 〜かな / rising intonation (no ですか).

See it in a sentence

  1. gakusei da.

    がくせい だ。

    I'm a student. (casual)

  2. kawaii.

    かわいい。

    Cute. (casual bare adj)

  3. tanoshii!

    たのしい!

    Fun! (casual)

  4. sore wa koohii da.

    それ は コーヒー だ。

    That's coffee. (casual)

  5. kyou wa hima.

    きょう は ひま。

    I'm free today.

    (casual noun/な-adj bare)

Watch out

い-adjectives: bare「かわいい」— not「かわいい だ」(that sounds wrong in standard casual) だ after nouns/な-adj only — and even then friends often drop it Casual ≠ rude to peers; it *is* too casual for staff, strangers, elders — keep です there

Try it

  1. In your next story, find a です line. Say the casual twin out loud (だ or bare adjective).

Produce the casual twin; keep polite with staff/strangers/elders.
