しあい を みます。どこ の ファン ですか?がんばれ!

How they differ

The pattern in plain English: name the thing, add a polite verb. Shiai o mimasu is "I watch the game." Swap the object and keep the verb: sakkaa o mimasu, yakyuu o mimasu. You already know o (を) and mimasu (みます), so the only new word is shiai (しあい), the game or match.

To ask which team someone supports, say doko no fan desu ka? Doko (どこ) here means "which place," because teams are named after cities. Answer with the team plus fan desu: Hanshin no fan desu.

Ganbare (がんばれ) is the one non-polite word in this lesson, and that is fine. It is a cheer, shouted at players, not said to a person in front of you. Everyone in the stadium yells it.

For the score, the stadium word is tai (たい), "versus." Ni tai ichi is 2 to 1. Ask nan tai nan desu ka? and point at the screen. Then the result: kachimashita (かちました) won, makemashita (まけました) lost.

Memory trick: "tie" sounds like tai, the word that sits between two scores. Gan-BAR-e: you're at the bar, cheering.

Say it out loud with a friend in a sports bar, then try this: tell someone your team and ask theirs. You'll see this next: bar ordering, so you can get a beer during the game.

See it in a sentence

Watch out

ganbare (がんばれ) is a cheer for players; to a friend facing a test, say ganbatte (がんばって). makemashita is plain fact, not rude. tai here is 'versus', not the tai of tabetai 'want to eat'.
