Lesson 5 · about 5 minutes
I'm okay, no thanks, excuse me
daijoubu desu · ii desu · sumimasen
だいじょうぶです・いいです・すみません
You'll learn three social glue phrases for "I'm okay," soft no-thanks, and "excuse me / sorry."
The words
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| daijoubu desu | だいじょうぶです | だいじょうぶです | I'm okay / it's all right (polite) | |
| ii desu | いいです | いいです | that's fine / I'm good — often a soft "no thanks" (polite) | |
| sumimasen | すみません | すみません | excuse me / sorry / thank you (for trouble) (polite) |
How they differ
These are ready-made lines more than grammar:
Someone checks on you → 「だいじょうぶです。」
Offered something you don't need → 「いいです。」or 「いいえ、いいです。」
Getting attention, apologizing, or thanking for effort → 「すみません。」
いいです here reuses いい from the adjective lesson. Tone and context matter: 「いい です ね」can mean "that's nice," while a short 「いいです」to an offer often means "I'm fine / no thanks."
Note: these may also live in Common Phrases in the app. This lesson ties them to story reading so you recognize them in dialogue.
Casual shorts you'll hear: だいじょうぶ、いいよ、ごめん.
Three pockets: okay · soft no · excuse me. だいじょうぶ = I'm fine, いいです = no thanks / fine, すみません = hey/sorry/thanks-for-bother.
One line: だいじょうぶ・いいです・すみません.
Next: You've finished Waves A–D of the beginner lesson track (day-one greetings/thanks/rescue already sit early in Wave B). Next: Wave E — town, transit, shopping, and social teineigo.
