Lesson 38 · about 5 minutes
Near, far, on foot
chikai · tooi · aruite
ちかい・とおい・あるいて
You'll learn how to say something is near or far, and that you're going on foot.
The words
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| chikai | ちかい | ちかい | near / close | |
| tooi | とおい | とおい | far | |
| aruite | あるいて | あるいて | on foot / by walking (て-form of あるきます) |
How they differ
Distance adjectives work like other い-adjectives (Lesson 17 style):
「えき は ちかい です」(eki wa chikai desu): the station is near
「ホテル は とおい です」(hoteru wa tooi desu): the hotel is far
あるいて is the walking means — often with いきます:
「あるいて いきます」(aruite ikimasu): I'll go on foot
「あるいて 五分 です」(aruite gofun desu): it's a five-minute walk (you'll meet ふん/ぷん for minutes later)
ちかく (chikaku) is the "nearby" adverb/noun form you'll hear in 「ちかく に あります」.
Map zoom: close · far · walk it. ちかい = zoom in, とおい = zoom out, あるいて = shoes, no ticket.
One line: ちかい・とおい・あるいて.
Next: Paying: カードで / げんきんで — card vs cash at the register.
See it in a sentence
eki wa chikai desu
えき は ちかい です。
The station is nearby. (polite)
tooi desu ka?
とおい です か?
Is it far? (polite)
aruite ikimasu
あるいて いきます。
I'll go on foot. (polite)
koko kara chikai desu
ここ から ちかい です。
It's close from here. (polite)
basu wa tooi desu
バス は とおい です。

Watch out
ちかい = near (distance) — not ちかい as in "recent" in deeper grammar yet; here it's place distance とおい = far — opposite of ちかい, not "slow" (おそい) あるいて = on foot — not あります (there is)
Try it
In your next story, find ちかい, とおい, or あるいて. Say out loud: near, far, or walking.
Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
