Lesson 2 · about 2 minutes
Thank you, you're welcome
arigatou gozaimasu · arigatou · dou itashimashite
ありがとう ございます・ありがとう・どういたしまして
You'll learn the core thank-you and a polite "you're welcome."
The words
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| arigatou gozaimasu | ありがとう ございます | ありがとう ございます | thank you (polite) | |
| arigatou | ありがとう | ありがとう | thanks (casual) | |
| dou itashimashite | どういたしまして | どういたしまして | you're welcome (polite) |
How they differ
Thank → reply:
Receive help or a purchase → 「ありがとう ございます。」
Soft reply → 「どういたしまして。」
In shops you'll also hear どうも ありがとう ございます (extra polite). Casual friends: ありがとう / どうも. Another common soft reply is いいえ ("no problem / don't mention it") — どういたしまして is the textbook "you're welcome," less constant in real life than learners expect, but you'll still see it in stories and polite dialogue.
Gift pass: thanks · no sweat. ありがとう = thank you, ございます = polish, どういたしまして = polite return.
One line: ありがとう → どういたしまして.
Next: Day-one rescue if you're lost: わかりません / もう いちど おねがいします / えいご は だいじょうぶ ですか.
