Hinchas por un día
Fans for a Day
An American arrives early to a World Cup watch party and ends up adopted by a rowdy group of Colombian fans.
Faltaban dos horas para el partido,
There were two hours left before the match,
y el bar ya olía a cerveza.
and the bar already smelled like beer.
Daniel entró el primero.
Daniel walked in first.
Quería el mejor asiento,
He wanted the best seat,
justo frente a la pantalla grande.
right in front of the big screen.
Llevaba la camiseta de Estados Unidos.
He was wearing the United States jersey.
De repente, una ola de amarillo.
Suddenly, a wave of yellow.
Diez hinchas de Colombia llegaron cantando.
Ten Colombia fans arrived singing.
"¡Miren al gringo!", gritó uno.
"Look at the gringo!", one shouted.
"¿Vienes a perder, parcero?"
"Coming to lose, buddy?"
Daniel sonrió, un poco nervioso.
Daniel smiled, a little nervous.
"Vine temprano por el buen puesto", contestó.
"I came early for the good spot," he answered.
Los colombianos se rieron a carcajadas.
The Colombians burst out laughing.
"¡Habla español el gringo!"
"The gringo speaks Spanish!"
Un hombre grande le tendió la mano.
A big man held out his hand.
"Me llamo Wilmer. Siéntate con nosotros."
"My name is Wilmer. Sit with us."
Y así, el enemigo se volvió invitado.
And just like that, the enemy became a guest.
Empezó el partido y todos enmudecieron.
The match began and everyone went quiet.
Al minuto diez, Colombia casi marca.
At minute ten, Colombia nearly scored.
El balón pegó en el travesaño.
The ball hit the crossbar.
"¡Uy, por poco!", gimió Wilmer.
"Ugh, so close!", Wilmer groaned.
Luego Estados Unidos tuvo su oportunidad.
Then the United States had its chance.
El portero la atajó con los pies.
The goalkeeper saved it with his feet.
Daniel saltó de su silla gritando.
Daniel jumped out of his chair shouting.
Los colombianos lo abuchearon entre risas.
The Colombians booed him amid laughter.
En el segundo tiempo, ¡penalti para Colombia!
In the second half, a penalty for Colombia!
El bar entero contuvo la respiración.
The whole bar held its breath.
¡Gol! El bar explotó en amarillo.
Goal! The bar exploded in yellow.
Wilmer abrazó a Daniel sin pensarlo.
Wilmer hugged Daniel without thinking.
"¡Ahora eres medio colombiano!", le dijo.
"Now you're half Colombian!", he told him.
Pero la fiesta atrajo problemas.
But the party attracted trouble.
Un tipo borracho chocó contra Daniel.
A drunk guy bumped into Daniel.
La cerveza se derramó por el suelo.
The beer spilled all over the floor.
"¿Qué miras, gringo?", lo desafió.
"What are you looking at, gringo?", he challenged him.
El borracho cerró el puño.
The drunk clenched his fist.
Pero Wilmer se puso delante de Daniel.
But Wilmer stepped in front of Daniel.
"Con él te metes con todos nosotros."
"Mess with him and you mess with all of us."
Los diez hinchas se levantaron a la vez.
The ten fans stood up at once.
El borracho se fue murmurando.
The drunk left muttering.
"Tranquilo, parce, aquí estás en familia."
"Relax, buddy, here you're family."
Wilmer pidió una ronda de aguardiente.
Wilmer ordered a round of aguardiente.
"Para brindar tienes que mirar a los ojos."
"To toast you have to look in the eyes."
"Si no, siete años de mala suerte."
"If not, seven years of bad luck."
Le enseñaron dichos que no se imprimen.
They taught him sayings you can't print.
Daniel se reía tanto que le dolía la barriga.
Daniel laughed so hard his belly hurt.
El partido terminó dos a uno, Colombia.
The match ended two to one, Colombia.
Pero Daniel ya no pensaba en el marcador.
But Daniel was no longer thinking about the score.
Alzaron las copas una última vez.
They raised their glasses one last time.
"¡A los ojos, gringo!", gritaron todos.
"In the eyes, gringo!", they all shouted.
Llegó solo, buscando un buen asiento.
He arrived alone, looking for a good seat.
Se fue con diez hermanos de amarillo.
He left with ten brothers in yellow.
