Lesson 20 · about 5 minutes
Please do ~ / may I ~?
~ te kudasai · ~ te mo ii desu ka · mite · matte · suwatte · itte · kite · yonde
〜てください・〜てもいいですか・みて・まって・すわって・いって・きて・よんで
You'll learn two survival phrases for "please do this" and "is it okay if I do this?"
The pattern
てください = please do · てもいいですか = may I?
| Romaji | Japanese | Reading | Meaning | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ~ te kudasai | 〜てください | 〜てください | please do ~ | |
| ~ te mo ii desu ka | 〜てもいいですか | 〜てもいいですか | may I ~? / is it okay if I ~? | |
| mite | みて | みて | look / see | |
| matte | まって | まって | wait | |
| suwatte | すわって | すわって | sit | |
| itte | いって | いって | go / say (same sound, different kanji later) | |
| kite | きて | きて | come | |
| yonde | よんで | よんで | read / call |
How they differ
Take a て-form and add ください for a polite request: 「みて ください。」(mite kudasai) "Please look." 「まって ください。」(matte kudasai) "Please wait."
Add もいいですか to ask permission: 「すわって も いい ですか?」(suwatte mo ii desu ka?) "May I sit?" 「みて も いい ですか?」(mite mo ii desu ka?) "May I look?"
You're not learning the full て-form system here — just a pocket set you'll see in shops, stations, and stories. Treat each て-word as a ready-made piece.
てください = "please do that action." てもいいですか = "is that action okay?"
One line: てください = please do · てもいいですか = may I?
Next: Saying what you want to do: 〜たいです (~ tai desu).

Try it
In your next story, find ください after a て-form, or find もいいですか. Say the line out loud and decide: request, or permission question?
Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
