How they differ

The pattern in plain English: topic + wa + question. X wa arimasu ka? asks "is there X?" X wa nanji desu ka? asks "what time is X?" Two frames, endless questions.

At the desk, start with chekkuin onegaishimasu. Then give your name and add yoyaku shite imasu, "I have a reservation." You met yoyaku (よやく) in the booking lesson. Staff will ask for your passport; hand it over.

Now the room questions. Waifai wa arimasu ka? Swap in what you need: taoru (タオル) towel, jihanki (じはんき) vending machine. For times, use nanji (なんじ): asagohan wa nanji desu ka? and chekkuauto wa nanji desu ka? The answer is usually a clock time like juuji (じゅうじ), ten o'clock.

Hotel staff speak very formal Japanese. You only need to recognize a few lines. Irasshaimase (いらっしゃいませ) is welcome. Shoushou omachi kudasai means "one moment, please." Kashikomarimashita (かしこまりました) means "certainly." Answer with plain polite words; that's perfect.

Memory trick: "wa arimasu ka" = "what's around?" Nan-JI: "ji" is the clock hand.

Say it out loud at the desk, then try this: ask whether there's a towel and when checkout is. You'll see this next: the airport.
