How they differ

Every day ends in ようび (youbi). The front piece is the "element" name: げつ·か·すい·もく·きん·ど·にち.

In sentences:

「げつようび です」(getsuyoubi desu): it's Monday

「どようび に いきます」(doyoubi ni ikimasu): I'll go on Saturday

に (ni) marks the day as a point in time (Lesson 23 family).

Week chant: moon · fire · water · wood · gold · earth · sun.

One line:

Next: From / until: から / まで — open hours and time spans.

See it in a sentence

  1. kyou wa nan'youbi desu ka?

Watch out

にちようび = Sunday / げつようび = Monday — easy swap when you're tired; chant from げつ ようび = day-of-week ending — not ひ (day as a date count) alone なんようび = what day of the week — not なんじ (what o'clock)

Try it

  1. In your next story, find any 〜ようび. Say the English day out loud before you keep reading.

Check against the lesson cluster and say it out loud.
